Founded in 1997, The Shakespeare Society has grown into a multi-faceted nonprofit cultural organization whose mission is to increase the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of William Shakespeare's works through performance, commentary and educational activities. Our target audience is everyone: young and old, rich and poor, professional theater artists and laymen. We fundamentally believe that Shakespeare can transform lives, especially if one begins the relationship early. To that end, The Shakespeare Society educates children, young adults and their teachers about Shakespeare through long-term intensive programs in which we partner with schools, afterschool programs and community organizations. The Hunts Point Children's Shakespeare Ensemble is one of our flagship educational programs, and is the subject of this grant request.
