Dorchester Youth Collaborative responds to the needs of low-income urban youth with innovative programs that celebrate their creativity and unique value to the community. The mission of DYC is to engage high-risk young people in relationships and projects that promote their development and achievement, as well as their health and the safety of the neighborhood. DYC runs a Safe Haven Teen Center on Dorchester Avenue in Fields Corner, and operates programs and provides services there, as well as in the community. Key programs include sports, recreation, tutoring and academic support, performing and media arts, leadership development and advocacy, transitional employment, and mentoring.
Founded in 1982, DYC serves teens who live in neighborhoods with high rates of violence, unemployment, poverty, and social instability, and who are more likely to become involved in the criminal justice and social service systems without interventions and support. DYC's staff works with some of the most at-risk youth in the city of Boston, providing them a safe place with caring and consistent adults. DYC focuses its programs, services, and intervention initiatives on hot spot streets, which the Boston Police Department has identified for their high rates of guns and violent crime.
